“Parenting is no sport for perfectionists,” Andrew Solomon writes in Far From the Tree, his groundbreaking and compassionate book about what it really means to be a parent. A lecturer in psychiatry at Cornell and the winner of a National Book Award, Solomon spent 10 years interviewing more than 300 families. He focused on parents of children with a range of physical, cognitive or psychological differences, and concluded that “the unhappy families who reject their variant children have much in common, while the happy ones who strive to accept them are happy in a multitude of ways.”
